Reducing Salt Intake Strategies to Lower Risk of Hypertension, and to Strengthen Our Immune System

Jakarta - In an effort to continue to disseminate the safety facts of Umami Seasoning and Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, PT AJINOMOTO INDONESIA in collaboration with INAVIGA INDONESIA held a Webinar Event: "Salt Reduction Strategy to Reduce the Risk of Hypertension".

The Webinar was held on Thursday, October 8, 2020, with Prof. Dr. Ir. Ahmad Sulaeman, MS, C.Ht, a Professor of Food Safety & Nutrition at the Faculty of Human Ecology (FEMA), IPB University, as a speaker, and there were over 190 Nutritionists & Dietitians who participated on this.

During the COVID-19 pandemic like today, Indonesian people are starting to be very worried about the condition of degenerative diseases, such as hypertension and the immune system, because they affect the recovery process if exposed to the COVID-19 virus. Therefore, PT AJINOMOTO INDONESIA, a company that is very concerned with issues of health & nutritional intake, constantly tries to socialize the importance of maintaining nutritional intake in various ways.

According to Prof. Ahmad Sulaeman, there are actually many ways to reduce the risk of hypertension, start from running a healthy lifestyle by do sport regularly, and avoiding smoking and alcoholic drinks, to quite complex ones by running the DASH Diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension). However, we can also reduce salt intake or a low salt diet, as an essential and easy enough way to reduce the risk of hypertension.

"To reduce salt intake or a low salt diet, we can replace the use of salt with umami seasoning such as MSG which will have another positive impact. So, if you still want the food you consume to have a delicious taste, but at the same time you also want to reduce salt, this method is very suitable, and in fact, this strategy also can improve our immune system," Prof. Ahmad said, at the webinar event.

"The sodium content in MSG is only 1/3 of the sodium content in normal salt, and there have also been many previous studies that have shown the use of MSG is beneficial to help reduce salt intake while maintaining food palatability. This is also proven by the halal certificate and BPOM permit that the use of MSG is very safe, as long as it is in accordance with the recommended use," he continued.
