How to Open Oyster Easily

Oyster is a type of shellfish that is quite expensive. And to open oysters requires special skills, here are tips that can be followed by culinary players.

A. Clean the Oyster

    • Clean the outside of the oyster with running water to remove grit. Scrub the shell using a brush or a coarse sponge.
    • Put the oysters on the kitchen towel
    • Do not use a regular knife to open oysters, this could be high risk of slipping and hurting yourself.
    • An oyster knife is a special blunt knife that made to open it.

B. Slide the knife around the lip of the oyster

    • Hold the oyster firmly.
    • Put the tip of the oyster knife into the front of the oyster about 1.5 cm.
    • Rotate the knife about 90˚ until the tip of the knife is almost pointing up
    • Oysters must remain in flat position, so that the liquid inside does not come out of the shell.

C. Open Oyster Shell

    • Keep the oyster in position and pry the shell with your finger.
    • Before separate the shell completely, use an oyster knife to remove any muscle that is still attached to the inside of the top shell.
    • Gently cut the muscle in the upper shell.

D. Clean the opened oysters 

    • Clean the inside of the oyster carefully.
    • Do not wash oysters after opening. This will definitely affect the taste.

E. Removing the lower muscle of the oyster

    • Cut the muscle under the oyster with an oyster knife and turn the contents over
    • Be careful not to spill the liquid.

F. Plating

Oysters can be eaten immediately after being opened or to be processed into a delicious menu.
