Spices are one of the main ingredients that are commonly used by professional kitchens. The lack of spices in dishes can affect the taste of the processed menu that is made. Sometimes, the quality and shelf life of spices can also affect the taste of the dish. Check out several ways to store spices, in a way to maintain their quality properly. 


1. Store in an airtight container

Whether it's a powder form or a pure form, make sure to store it in an airtight container, immediately after opening.

2. Avoid exposing the seasoning directly to sunlight

Ideally, spices are stored in a dry place and not exposed to sunlight because it can reduce the aroma, color, and taste. Try to store it in a dark & dry place, such as a cupboard or kitchen drawer.

3. Keep the spices away from hot and humid temperatures

Apart from sunlight, avoid storing spices near heat sources, such as ovens, gas stoves and microwaves. Avoid exposing spices to damp areas, such as sinks and dishwashers. The ideal temperature is in a room temperature which is around 20⁰C.

4. Keep it in the Chiller

This method is suitable for you who’ve bought spices like chili powder and paprika, as storing them in the chiller can help them retain their color and freshness.

5. Use dry equipment when taking spices

Avoid taking the spices with a wet spoon because the moisture can make spices moldy. Discoloration is a clear sign of moldy spices.

6. Add Silica Gel during the storage process

Add silica gel to the container containing the spices to prevent mold growth and maintain the freshness of the spices. Basically, silica gel functions to keep the spices moist during the storage process.
